What is Trinket?

When completing our HTML & CSS and Python projects, we recommend using a website called Trinket to write and run code online.

There’s no need to install any software to use Trinket as it runs in a web browser.

You can find out more about Trinket on their FAQ.

It’s important to understand that Trinket creates public web pages and projects that can be viewed by anyone with a link. Please make sure you remind your club members about the importance of not sharing personal information online.

Using Trinket

Trinket is available online at trinket.io

The Code Club projects include a short url to open either an empty project or a starter project containing resources in Trinket.

Saving Trinkets

Trinket accounts make it easier to keep track of projects and make updates to a project.

Please note that parental permission is required for Trinket accounts for under 13s, see the 'Creating Trinket Accounts' section below for more information.

Trinket can also be used without an account. To save work you can ‘Share’ to get a link that can be used to view to the project. Note that each time you change a project you will get a new link.

If your club members don’t have accounts then we recommend keeping track of links to their Trinkets in a document so that it’s easy to return to them.

Trinket Accounts

Trinket can be used without an account. Projects are automatically saved online and can be accessed in Code Club or at home from a link.

A Trinket account makes it easy to find all of your projects and to make updates to projects. Without an account you need to keep track of urls for individual projects and a new url will be created each time a project is modified.

Creating Trinket Accounts

Note that parental permission is required to create accounts for children under 13.

Code Club advise that only a teacher or an educator from the club venue do this, and that person should ensure that appropriate permissions are given before any accounts are created for children.

The person who creates the accounts would also be responsible for managing password resets, dealing with other account related issues and would also be the contact point for any instances where accounts had been mis-used.

Creating Multiple Trinket Accounts

It is possible to create multiple Trinket accounts with a single gmail email address.

For example, if a user registers with the email address codeclubhost@gmail.com then email addresses of the form codeclubhost+member1@gmail.com can also be used to create Trinket accounts.

If you are setting up accounts for your Code Club, we recommend a uniform anonymised style for usernames. For example:

  • Username = schoolname + number (eg, StMarys001)

Take care not to include personally identifying information in the usernames.
